Mizoram is one of the seven sister state of North East India situated IN The southernmost tip of the north eastern states. Agriculture is the mainstay of the people of Mizoram. Sixty percent of the total population is engaged in Agriculture. The age old practice of Jhum cultivation is carried out annually by a large number of people living in rural areas. The climatic condition of the state is favorable for cultivation of many major spices with rainfall of 1900mm to 3000mm spread over eight to ten months. Location of tropical and temperate zone with various soil types is also advantageous for growing various horticultural crops including spices crops.
The popularity of growing agricultural crops mostly based upon the food habits of the inhabitants of particular state or locality. Mizoram is primarily a tribal state and according to that they are using spices mostly as raw or fresh. There are many spices which are traditionally growing in the state with or without significant commercial value. Some of the important spices which are commonly growing and using by the Mizo peoples are Turmeric (Raw and dried powdered), Ginger (Raw), Chilli (Raw as green or ripen and dry form including powdered and chilli flakes). Among these Ginger, Turmeric and Chilli (bird eye chilli and king chilli) are the major commercially growing spices in Mizoram.

Organic cultivation of Ginger & Turmeric, Supply of Turmeric boilers & polishers, construction of vermin-compost pits, Quality and Entrepreneurship training programmes, Different Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programmes, Physical and virtual Buyer-Seller Meets, Exposure visits for farmers to spice growing southern states etc. are the areas/activities which the Board intervenes.
