Lakshadweep, India’s smallest Union Territory Lakshadweep is an archipelago consisting of 36 islands with an area of 32 sq km. It is a Union Territory comprising of reefs, submerged banks and ten inhabited islands and is having a total area of 32 sq km. The capital is Kavaratti and it is also the principal town of the UT. All Islands are 220 to 440 km away from the coastal city of Kochi in Kerala, in the Arabian Sea.However, there is not much intervention in the Spices Sector at present due to the peculiar type of soils, geography and submerged banks. Board is planning for a pronged approach for the cultivation and development of identified spices in the Island. The massive potential for expansion of area in non-traditional areas is yet to be tapped and explored.
