Himachal Pradesh is a Province of the Snow laden Mountains in the northern part of India. Situated in the Western Himalayas, it is one of the 11th mountain states and is characterized by an extreme landscape featuring several peaks and extensive river systems. It comprises 12 districts and surrounded by union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to the north, Punjab to the west, Haryana to the southwest, Uttarakhand to the southeast and narrow border with Uttar Pradesh to the South. The State also shares an international border to the east with the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. It is also known as 'Dev Bhoomi' or 'Land of Gods and Goddess' and 'Veer Bhoomi' which means 'Land of Braves'. Out of the total geographical area of 55.67 lakh hectares in Himachal Pradesh the gross cropped area is about 9.51 lakh hectares.
Himachal Pradesh has been endowed with a wide range of agro climatic conditions divided into 4 climatic zones due to which a large number of horticulture commodities like fruit crops (from temperate to sub-tropical), flowers, vegetables, mushrooms, hops, tea, medicinal & aromatic plants etc. are successfully grown here. Among the 75 spices cultivated in India, six spices are widely grown in the Himachal Pradesh like Chilli, Ginger, Garlic, Black Jeera and Turmeric. The present area under spices is 7285 ha. with a production of 13810 MT. The main spice growing Districts are Sirmaur, Chamba, Bilaspur, Solan, Kinnaur, Lahaul Valley, Kangra, Kullu valley etc.

The overall upliftment of spice sector by implementing post-harvest management and proper guidance to spice fraternity is being looked after by the Board's Extension Office at Una.
