Chhattisgarh, a state of 'Thirty-Six Forts' was the part of Madhya Pradesh in Central India, granted statehood on 1st November, 2000. It is the ninth largest state in India, with the total geographical area of around 138 lakh ha. with net sown area of 46.51 lakh ha., which is 34% of its total geographical area. Chhattisgarh has one of the richest bio-diverse area in the country with around 63.4 lakh ha. area under forest cover, which is 46% of its total geographical area. It comprises 32 districts and surrounded by Uttar Pradesh to the north, Madhya Pradesh to the northwest, Maharashtra to the southwest, Jharkhand to the northeast, Odisha to the east, and Telangana & Andhra to the south. Agriculture is the chief economic occupation of the state. Apart from paddy, cereals like maize, kodo-kutki and other small millets, pulses like tur and kulthi and oilseeds like Groundnut, Soyabean, Niger and Sunflower are also grown. Of the three agro climatic zones, about 73% of the Chhattisgarh plains, 97% of the Bastar plateau and 95% of the northern hills are rainfed. Yet productivity is not very high. This brought a new thrust on the sector of horticulture, as the region is also suitable for growing spices like Ginger, Garlic, Turmeric and Coriander.
Chhattisgarh is one of the high-dense forest area states with huge and unique biodiversity and also divided into three agro-climatic zones with immense potential for agricultural development.
Among the 75 spices cultivated in India, 5 spices are widely grown in Chhattisgarh like Chilli, Ginger, Garlic, Turmeric and Coriander. The present area under spices is 13514 ha. with a production of 15715 MT. The main spice growing districts are Korea, Kondagaon, Raigarh, Surgula, Korba, Bilaspur and Mahasamundh.
As on May 2023, the State has a spice exporter base of 25 firms. The collective annual exports of spices and spice products during the year 2021-22 through the ports in Chhattisgarh is around 6.8 MT valued at Rs.35.00 Lakhs.

Overall development of spices and upliftment of spice sector by implementing post-harvest management and proper guidance to spice fraternity is being carried out by the Field Office at Jagdalpur, Chattisgarh.
