The state represents wide variation in climate ranging from cold to warm pre-humid and receives mean annual rainfall exceeding 2000 mm per annum. The soils of the region are usually rich in organic matter and acidic to strongly acidic (pH 4.2- 5.0) in reaction and thus suitable for growing different rhizomatous and tree spice crops. Agro-climatically the region is known for its wide diversity representing temperate, subtropical and tropical areas. The diversity within a single region provides ample scope for growing a large number of crops.
The climatic condition of the state is highly suitable for cultivation of a large number of spices such as Large Cardamom, Ginger, Turmeric, Chilli, Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Garlic, Cinnamon etc. Large Cardamom, Ginger and Turmeric are the main cash crops supporting the livelihood and improving the economic level of many growers of the state. The state has acquired GI tag of Naga Mircha (King Chilli) which is the first crop of the state to be given the GI Tag.
Among spices, Large Cardamom and Ginger cultivation has increased many folds followed by Turmeric. Ginger is already a well-established cash crop in Nagaland. Large Cardamom Area Expansion, Certified Nursery Scheme, Supply of Large Cardamom Dryer, Large Cardamom irrigation schemes, Organic cultivation of Ginger and Turmeric, Construction of Vermi compost Unit, Quality Training Programs, Exposure visit for farmers to other spice growing state and organizing National and International Buyer-Seller Meets etc. are the areas which the Board intervenes.
